One year ago, the Invercargill City Council (ICC) launched the new Bus Smart service using E3solutions' on-board passenger information system
technology. After a very successful launch, the system has been extended to provide greater functionality for the council.
Automatic Passenger Counting (APC) equipment has been installed in all Bus Smart buses to count passengers entering and leaving the buses. This data is combined with route and bus stop data to produce comprehensive reporting that will allow the council to perform advanced route and bus stop trend analysis. It will also allow the council to analyse the arrival/departure times of the buses at each stop to determine if KPIs of the bus operator are met.
“This new technology will enable the council to strategically plan, manage and monitor their investment in bus stops and shelters”, said Keith Chew, Managing Director of E3solutions, “By using this new information to improve the spread and count of bus stops, it will enhance the Bus Smart service and improve passenger satisfaction”.
Force sensors have also been installed in all the buses to monitor passenger comfort during their journey on the buses. “The long term strategic plan for installing this technology is to allow the bus operator to monitor, improve and achieve a consistent and pleasant service on all routes”, said Eddie Cook, the Senior Traffic Management Officer at Invercargill City Council.
